What are the National Occupational Standards?
The National Occupational Standards for Early Years Care and Education are a useful tool for all employers. They are used to assess learners working towards their NVQ but can also be used to support quality provision within your workplace.
The National Occupational Standards are the minimum standards that workers should work to. These standards form the basis of NVQ's, which are work-based, competence assessed qualifications available at different levels.
Level 2
This level is suitable for people working under supervision.
Level 3
This level is for those who work under their own initiative, planning and organising their own work and supervising others.
Level 4
This level is for experienced practitioners who carry out complex and non routine tasks, for those in a management role, for those with responsibility
for quality assurance.
The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) have established a framework of qualifications. This means workers have a clear guide to appropriate qualifications, linked to job roles and showing routes for carrer progression.
NVQ's are based on the National Occupational Standards; eacfh level has a core of mandatory units, plus additional optionalo untits. Candidates must be assessed as being competent across all of the units to achieve their award.
As well as gaining a full NVQ, it is possible to gain individual units to complement existing qualifications. If staff need to update their skills in a particular area, they could do this by selecting the appropriate units and would be assessed in the workplace in the usual way.
Now is the ideal time to ensure your staff are appropriately qualified and updated in their skills. The Skills Funding Agency will fund leaners who meet the applicable criteria - see Funding.
