Learning from the best 

Eden Training was pleased to be involved in a recent Ofsted initiative looking at examples of best practice from providers of apprenticeships in underperforming vocational areas.

Eden Training was one of 39 providers visited between October 2009 and January 2010, All providers had been judged as either good or outstanding for their overall effectiveness at the most recent inspection or had shown a sustained improvement in apprenticeship success rates.

The report highlights key findings from the approaches adopted by successful providers which include:

• good initial advice and guidance has a positive impact on recruiting learners to the right areas and reducing drop out rates.
• early initial assessment had a positive impact on the take up of learning support which improved success rates
• in the best providers the individual learning plan was used well to meet learner needs impacting positively on progress
• the strong vocational backgrounds of the providers' staff and having one main assessor throughout the training were key factors in engaging employers and apprentices
• good support from employers was a common factor  in raising success rates
• flexible training and assessment met employer and learner needs as well as increasing the amount of evidence derived from the workplace
• good use of management information in planning and monitoring the work of assessors was a key to achieving timely success
